Architecture as Art / Activism
James founded BUILD THAT PARK, a campaign and international competition to design a truly binational park at the westernmost end of the U.S./Mexico border, accessible to both Mexico and the U.S. This ongoing focus is, in part, follow-up to his to effort resolve the issue of a second border fence constructed in 2009 just 100' from the primary fence, cutting off access for families and friends to meet with their loved ones, and the focus of his 2018 Loeb Fellowship. The part activism/part architecture project proposed to amend this damage by inserting a 60' rolling gate within the outer fence. The BUILD THAT PARK design competition will culminate in binational exhibitions depicting options for an accessible International Friendship Park. Learn more at buildthatpark.org.
